The Influence of Age on Male Mate-Searching Behaviour in Thornbug Treehoppers

چکیده
Life-history theory predicts that as males age they should increase investment in reproductive effort because their residual reproductive value (RRV) – the opportunity for future reproductive events – declines (Stearns 1992). Such investment is often manifested as age-related increases in the intensity, rate, or duration of a costly behaviour important for acquiring mates. Sexual traits showing the predicted positive relationship between RRV and reproductive effort include visual and acoustic mate advertisement signals (Bertram 2000; Miller & Brooks 2005; Garamszegi et al. 2007; Jacot et al. 2007; Bitton et al. 2008; Alonso et al. 2010), and courtship behaviour (Woodhead 1986; Höglund & Lundberg 1987; Conner 1989; Felton et al. 2006; Alonso et al. 2010). Recent studies, however, have shown that the physical condition of males is an important influence on the nature of the relationship between age and Correspondence Paul A. Local population density and group composition influence the signal-preference relationship in Enchenopa treehoppers (Hemiptera: Membracidae).
Many animals exhibit social plasticity - changes in phenotype or behaviour in response to experience with conspecifics that change how evolutionary processes like sexual selection play out. Here, we asked whether social plasticity arising from variation in local population density in male advertisement signals and female mate preferences influences the form of sexual selection. We manipulated l...
متن کاملThe evolution of experience-mediated plasticity in mate preferences.
Experience of sexual signals can alter mate preferences and influence the course of sexual selection. Here, we examine the patterns of experience-mediated plasticity in mate preferences that can arise in response to variation in the composition of mates in the environment. We use these patterns to test hypotheses about potential sources of selection favouring experience-mediated plasticity. We ...
متن کاملGenetic variation in social influence on mate preferences.
Patterns of phenotypic variation arise in part from plasticity owing to social interactions, and these patterns contribute, in turn, to the form of selection that shapes the variation we observe in natural populations. This proximate-ultimate dynamic brings genetic variation in social environments to the forefront of evolutionary theory. However, the extent of this variation remains largely unk...
متن کاملDiel variation in a dynamic sexual display and its association with female mate-searching behaviour.
Dynamic sexual signals often show a diel rhythm and may vary substantially with time of day. Diel and short-term fluctuations in such sexual signals pose a puzzle for condition capture models of mate choice, which assume a female preference for male traits that reliably reflect a male's quality. Here we experimentally manipulated the food supply of individual male field crickets Gryllus campest...
متن کاملNot what it looks like: mate-searching behaviour, mate preferences and clutch production in wandering and territory-holding female fiddler crabs
Risks inherent in mate-searching have led to the assumption that females moving sequentially through populations of courting males are sexually receptive, but this may not be true. We examined two types of fiddler crab females: wanderers moving through the population of courting males and residents that were occupying and defending their own territories. Sometimes residents leave territories to...
